A Lash Technician’s Guide to Working with Short Natural Lashes
Whether or not you should apply eyelash extensions to natural lashes that are still in the anagen growth stage has always been a controversial topic for Lash Techs. Some Lash Trainers believe that 'baby lashes' should be allowed to grow freely until they become 'teenagers' and can better support an eyelash extension. However, as a Lash Technician, you've probably noticed that leaving some lashes without extensions can affect the overall look of a set.
The important distinction? A short natural lash is not necessarily a newly growing lash, and length alone does not tell you whether it can support an extension. Assess each lash individually rather than trying to cover every gap.
Why Some Lash Techs Avoid Shorter Natural Lashes
The primary concern for many Lash Techs is the potential for overloading and damaging shorter natural eyelashes. Here’s why:
Weight and Length Issues: Extensions that are too heavy or too long for the supporting natural lash can place unnecessary stress on it, potentially causing breakage or premature lash loss.
Client’s Lash Health: Fine, fragile, damaged, or newly emerging lashes may not be suitable for extensions. Check their condition and strength rather than assuming that all short lashes have the same needs.
Can You Apply Lash Extensions to Shorter Natural Lashes?
The good news is that some shorter natural lashes may be suitable for extensions. The decision should follow an individual assessment, with lash health taking priority over achieving complete coverage. Here are the key considerations:
Choose an Appropriate Lash Length: Opt for shorter extensions where suitable, taking the natural lash’s length, thickness, condition, and attachment area into account. Avoid choosing the extension length simply to match neighbouring lashes or fill a visible gap.
Use Lightweight Lash Extensions: Consider lightweight options, such as our Matt Flat Lashes, where appropriate. Compare the specifications of the particular extension you’re using: a flat shape alone does not make every diameter or length suitable for a fine natural lash.
Proper Application Technique: Ensure each natural lash is isolated correctly to avoid creating stickies, which can cause discomfort and damage when neighbouring lashes grow at different rates. Check isolation throughout the treatment and again before finishing.
Know When to Leave a Lash Alone: If a lash is too fine, fragile, or newly emerging to support an appropriate extension, leave it unlashed. A small gap is preferable to placing unnecessary stress on the natural lash.
Why a Tailored Approach Works
Using shorter, lighter extensions on suitable natural lashes can help create a balanced finish without trying to make every extension the same length. This also allows you to accommodate the different lengths and stages of growth present across the lash line.
As natural lashes grow, their extensions move farther from the lash line. An unsuitable extension can become harder for the natural lash to support, which is why appropriate product selection and regular maintenance matter. Choosing a shorter extension does not guarantee that a developing lash will grow safely; suitability still needs to be assessed individually.
You can apply this principle when planning both Classic Lashes and Volume sets. For Volume application, consider the total weight of the fan rather than judging suitability by the thickness of a single fibre. Your Volume lash tweezers should also allow precise pickup and placement.
If a client experiences discomfort, twisting extensions, or unexpected lash loss, review the application and arrange a professional assessment rather than simply adding more extensions. For broader troubleshooting, read our guide to lash retention problems.
Working with shorter natural lashes calls for a thoughtful, individual approach. By understanding the potential risks and choosing suitable products and techniques, you can create beautiful results while keeping natural lash health at the centre of your decisions. Remember, you don’t need to lash every natural eyelash to create a lovely set. Your clients will appreciate your care, expertise, and attention to detail!
